IP Services: Patent Agents

Patent agents (or patent attorneys as many of them sometimes prefer to be called) apply for patents, trade mark and design registrations. They can also advise on the subsistence of other intellectual property rights such as copyrights and database rights, commercialization and enforcement. Some patent agents are accredited to conduct litigation or appear as advocates in the High Court, Patents and other County Courts with Intellectual Property lists.

The Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 established a register of patent agents as well as a directory of patent attorneys. Only those who are entered on that register can lawfully describe themselves as patent agents. Most registered patent agents are members of the Chartered Institute of Patent Agents ("CIPA") and many are also members of the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys ("ITMA").
